90th Anniversary of the Restoration of Diplomatic Relations Between Russia and the United States
I rather doubt a similar PR was issued within the Outlaw US Empire noting this important anniversary. Here’s what Russia had to say:
November 16, 1933 is a significant date in the difficult and critically important relations between Russia and the United States for the maintenance of international peace and security. On this day, 16 years after the October Revolution, during which Washington stubbornly refused to recognize the young Soviet state, the continuity of our interstate ties, dating back to 1807, was restored.
At that time, the ruling circles of the United States overstepped their own ambitions and stereotypes, recognizing the new realities. This not only opened up broad opportunities for the development of mutually beneficial trade and economic cooperation, but also laid the foundation for the Soviet-American alliance during the Great Patriotic War.
Subsequently, relations between our countries experienced ups and downs, obeying the logic of the Cold War and balancing even on the brink of a nuclear conflict, as was the case during the Cuban Missile Crisis, but did not cross the fatal "point of no return." U.S. statesmen of that era had the good sense to stop and negotiate with the USSR for peaceful coexistence and arms control.
Unfortunately, such a pragmatic perception of reality turned out to be uncharacteristic of the generation of the American political elite that took the reins of power in the 1990s and 2000s, for whom the illusory belief in the "end of history" and the "golden age of US hegemony" was and remains the basic worldview. Not to mention the inability of today's politicians and the expert community overseas to adequately assess the processes in Russia after 1991. Against the backdrop of tectonic geopolitical shifts that are changing the balance of power on the world stage, Washington is obsessively betting on the "global containment of Moscow and Beijing" and, ultimately, the entire world majority that disagrees with the "rules-based world order" imposed by the West.
This is the root cause of the deepest crisis that Russian-American relations are currently experiencing. Through the fault of Washington, which has adopted rabid Russophobia, they [relations] have become extremely thin and risk being torn apart at any moment. This is not Russia's choice, but the irresponsible steps taken by the United States to spin the flywheel of escalation, including the doctrinally set task of inflicting a "strategic defeat" on Moscow, could lead to catastrophic consequences.
Today's anniversary is still an occasion to recall the positive historical experience of our countries, when cooperation was built on the basis of respect and mutual consideration of interests. It was these principles that formed the basis of the 1933 agreement on the restoration of diplomatic relations, and they fully retain their relevance in the current unprecedentedly difficult situation.
There’re several ways to view this message. I prefer the straightforward realist view that Russia’s trying to connect with the few realists within the Establishment. But then, how many read Russian PRs when they’re issued? Perhaps it’s for internal consumption. Its issuance comes at a very critical time of US-Russian relations. Think of this as an FYI while reading the selections provided from Maria Zakharova’s weekly briefing, which will be the next item posted.
