Russia and China connect people and improve their lives. The opposite of the Western Imperial playbook. Nice reminder!

Oh, how I wish we had something like this in Canada! Rail, bus -- any kind of public transit to get us around the country. Congratulations to Russia on the expansion of its BAM project.

Russia just began its high-speed rail service between St. Petersburg and Moscow and is building three other rail lines in the Arctic along with the expanded BAM. And then there're the many new roads and what we'd call interstates here. There's a great deal of connectivity infrastructure to be built and kept up. I wanted to post a picture of the massive tunnel, but the size was far too small.

Aliyev Sr. was characterized as a "Strong Man" and was semi-dictatorial like the Shah. And he wasn't the only one of that sort within the USSR from Stalin's demise onward, and their ways helped the USSR to fall. Nazarbayev in Kazakhstan was also like that with both regimes fueled by the corruption associated with oil. And of course, the #1 most corrupted nation by oil is the Outlaw US Empire--The Seven Sisters.

true... of course it was also his son - aliyev jr who was invited and who has played a similar role in present day Azerbaijan.. some things appear not to change...

I'd like to say life is better now than then in Azerbaijan, but I stopped reading Country Reports about the time Aliyev Sr, died. It's even with Brazil on the UN Development Index, which isn't enviable, IMO.
