I'm quite new to your column, but I'm wondering if Russia has clean energy plans. This is an impressive feat described, but I hope there are plans for renewable energy in the works, and I'd love to hear about them. Thanks.

Yes, it's been mentioned mostly in commentary exchanges as I've yet to feature an article on it specifically. I recently mentioned Rosatom's work on wind power and its subsidiary Nova Wind. Here are two links, https://www.rosatom.ru/en/rosatom-group/wind-energy/

https://novawind.ru/eng/?ysclid=lngfwap4te830988862

Both are in English. Russia's many rivers generate a large amount of hydro power. It also has lots of steppe to spread solar panels. You should also be aware that Rosatom has mastered the nuclear fuel cycle, meaning all waste can now be burned thus no waste to dispose of. Team Putin is very aware of climate change reality as their Arctic tells them readily. Also, Russia recently enacted a law that all products produced within Russia must be 100% recyclable, plus Russia is working hard to clean its environment from the gross excesses form its Soviet past. Ecology is often mentioned by Putin in his talks with government members. He's personally promoted Ecotourism stressing the need for balance between access and preservation, particularly with Lake Bikal.

One other point. Cancers from carcinogenic pollutants released unchecked during the Soviet period have become close to epidemic and severely impact Russia's life expectancy rates a deadly reality that caused Russia and Putin to declare war on it by training more oncologists and opening specific oncology clinics nationwide. While not specifically environmentalism, such action shows something equally or perhaps even more important--proper care of the people, not just Russians, impacted by acts of the past. Russia's pharma and medical technology sectors are also deeply engaged with progress reported on a regular basis. What was called "Ecocide" back in the 1990s regarding the USSR's pollution catastrophe that no longer exists IMO shows the great disconnect between the Post-Stalin Soviet political elite and ordinary Soviets, which is one of the major reasons why the USSR collapsed at the political level, not at the street level.
