There's the idea that it is a huge tell how a people/culture/civilization deals with their land, and the nature that they are inhabiting/inheriting. Over historical timespans, some develop theirs; others coexist; and a few start to lay waste and ruin. Like it's a sickness.
When I recently learned about the giant old growth forests the US settlers used up to the last tree for timber, I was reminded of the British, who did the same to their isles, and in particular to Ireland. This may show that there are roots to this problem which extend beyond a short-lived 'accident' of history. I can't really pin it down myself, but lack of empathy is certainly a major part of it.
Incidentally, it happened to me that I found out one of my close friends was a psychopath. The drama never stops, much as with Trump apparently. He also enjoys dealing out threats; I'll assume it gives him a sense of control and domination over a relationship. Why he would need that, I don't know. After I had my realization and overcame initial shock and unease, the habit became dull and rather disingenious.
